In order to extend its reach beyond north Indian cities, the All India Hair and Beauty Association launched its Madurai chapter on Wednesday.

A total of 265 registered members from across nine southern districts took part in the inauguration of the chapter .

“The main objective is to begin educating B, C and D centres. It can be useful for women in rural areas who are hoping to gain a skill and make a living,” according to Madurai chapter secretary N. Grahalakshmi.

It was easy to train make up artists and stylists in ‘A’ centres — metro cities. The programme could empower women in the rural areas too, she said.

The association plans to conduct seminars on a series of topics at a nominal rate. Their areas of focus include airbrush makeup, bridal look, cloudy and smoky eyes and covering skin imperfections.

The association aims to spread its wings across south India with chapters in Chennai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore as well. They also plan to adopt some villages and sponsor the education of promising candidates who wish to learn different beautifying techniques, president V. Athilakshmi and Ms. Grahalakshmi said.
