Road construction season about to get underway in Minnesota

With the warmer weather... construction season gets underway in the minnesota area... including plans to repair twelve bridges along i- 90.

News 8's alec giannakopoulos joins us live with details on the spring repairs.

Every three years or so small bridges along i-90 get repaired and reinforced.

A stretch of bridges in minnesota are due for repairs this spring, which may slow you down on your commute.

"the eastbound enterprise area is a favorite road stop for many traveling down i 90.

For custodian garry ellinghausen, it's a great place to spend his semi- retirement.

"i just love it here.

Beautiful scenery, excellent place to work.

I get compliments daily.

They love stopping here.

People bypass other rest stops to stop here."

But, unfortunat ely... for the next two months, the enterprise area will have to close as construction begins on i-90.

"yeah it's going to be an inconvenience in the area."

The minnesota dot will begin construction on 12 bridges from nodine to st.

Charles, the construction is mainly upkeep the bridges need.

"it's not a full replacement for the bridge, they'll take it down and it gives us longer life for the bridge.

There's just a long stretch of bridges along here that have come due.

The constructio n will be from early may to mid summer, and the interstate in those areas will be one lane for that stretch of time.

"it's a good big project that at the end will give the bridges a longer life.

And in that two month stretch, mr. ellinghausen will find other work to do.

"it's spring in minnesota you got a bunch of farmers that i can go drive a tractor for or something, i'll find something to do."

And for those who live by the area, "i was born five miles from here, four miles from here."

They've dealt with construction before... "everyone knows there's two seasons in minnesota.

Winter and construction season, and it's construction season now."

In addition to bridge constuction, the dot also plans on repaving parts of highway 61 in may up to the winona area.

Is there anything else drivers need to look out for?

Construction workers.

They'll be working as long as the weather permits them, and it's advised to slow down, watch for signs, and be aware of their presense.
