CBSC: No lesser studies, better score but lesser options, says Expert

Indore: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to reduce chapters of Social Science by slashing as many 75 pages from Class 10 syllabus of NCERT book from this academic session Students and parents are expecting lesser studies and better scores after trimming the syllabus. But, that won’t be the case. Rather, this slash down means lesser options in History, addition of a chapter in Geography and extra chapters for unit test in Civics. Following is how Social Science syllabus has been revamped and changed for students and analysis by subject expert Pallavi Thergaonkar:

HISTORY: In the academic session 2018-2019, there were eight chapters. Out of which students were taught four chapters. Normally, the school picked out four chapters that were taught to students. In the first unit, schools could pick out chapter 1 or chapter 2. However, chapter 2 (Nationalism in Indo-China) has been removed from this academic session. This makes chapter 1, ie Nationalism in Europe compulsory for students.

Another choice was provided in unit 3, which had chapter 4, 5 and 6. Out of this, chapter 4, ie ‘Making of the Global World’ has been removed. This leaves a choice for students between 5 and 6. The last choice was provided in unit 4, between chapter 7 and 8. Chapter 8, ie Novel Society has been removed. This makes chapter 7, ie ‘Print cutting in Modern World’ compulsory for students.

GEOGRAPHY: From Geography, a chapter ‘Forest Society’ had been removed in the academic session 2018-2019. The chapter has been brought back but only to be tested in unit tests. Further, another chapter ‘Water Resources’ will be tested in only unit tests as well.

CIVICS: Making the board a little easier, while keeping the syllabus still intact, CBSE has chosen three chapters that will be only tested in unit tests and not in final board examinations. The three chapters in Civics that won’t be tested in finals are: CHAPTER 3: Democracy and Diversity

Chapter 5: Political Struggles and Movements

Chapter 8: Challenges to Democracy

ECONOMICS : A chapter ‘Consumer Rights’ will only be a part of the syllabus for project work.

POSSIBLE EFFECT OF THE CHANGE

The overall change is likely to be helpful for students in examination. Most students tend to get confused in questions from Chapter 7 (Print cutting in Modern World) and chapter 8 (Novel Society) in History. So it would be better to have questions only from one chapter. Overall, students might find the board exam a notch easier with three chapters from civics removed, one from geography and one from economics.
