IMD warns those venturing into deep sea

Thiruvananthapuram: The India meteorological department (IMD) has advised fishermen engaged in deep sea fishing to return to coasts at least by 12am on Saturday as it has predicted strong wind with speed up to 85 kmph over equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining south-west Bay of Bengal. The rough weather is the result of a low pressure area forming in the region.
The IMD has warned fishermen from venturing into the sea from Saturday onwards. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has predicted that sea will be rough near shore till 11.30pm on Thursday. In an alert issued on Wednesday, INCOIS has predicted presence of waves of 1-2.2 metres height and advised fishermen to be cautious while venturing into the sea.
The evening bulletin of IMD on Wednesday stated that the low pressure area over equatorial Indian Ocean will intensify into a depression in 36 hours. It is likely to move in the north-west direction towards Tamil Nadu coast and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Under its influence, the state is likely to experience thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds till Saturday. The Kerala state disaster management authority has warned against lightning, especially in the afternoon.
Rain was reported in Idukki (4cm); Konni in Pathanamthitta and Nilambur in Malappuram (2cm); and Punalur in Kollam, Myladumpara in Idukki, Ambalavayal in Wayanad, Irikkur and Thalassery in Kannur (1cm) on Wednesday.

The state has been witnessing a harsh summer since the beginning of March and experienced a severe deficiency of summer showers. However, the pre-monsoon showers in the last two weeks has compensated for this deficiency.
Among the districts, Wayanad is witnessing 68% excess rainfall in the summer season while Thrissur recorded 25% excess. Summer showers are normal in Ernakulam, Malappuram, Palakkad and Pathanamtitta and deficient in all other districts. Summer showers have brought down the temperature, which was 2-3 degree celsius above normal in the past weeks.
