PUNE: Words tattooed on the right hand of a body found in Pavana river at Gahunje village on April 15, led the Talegaon Dabhade police to ascertain the identity of the deceased. They also arrested three persons on Tuesday, who had bludgeoned the man to death and later dumped the body into the river.
The deceased has been identified as Mangesh Anant Bhagwat (38) of Somatane in Maval taluka, about 30km from here. Bhagwat was a criminal in the police records and had eight cases of robbery and other crimes registered against him. The suspect Shrikant Murhe (35) of Somatane murdered Bhagwat along with his friends as Bhagwat was harassing him and had also threatened to kill him and his family members. The other two have been identified as Swapnil Kale (23) and Pravin Shedge (26) both from Somatane.
“Bhagwat’s relatives too did not approach police after he went missing on April 10, as they too were frustrated by his harassment,” said Pramod Kshirsagar, assistant inspector of the Talegaon Dabhade police.

On April 15, the Talegaon Dabhade police were alerted about an unidentified man’s body floating in the Pavana river at Gahunje village.
During the probe police got the information that a criminal on the police records from Somatane too had ‘Om’ and ‘Aai’ tattooed on his hand. Bhagwat’s parents and wife later ascertained the identity of the body. Bhagwat’s wife told the police about dispute between Murhe and her husband on April 10. The police took Murhe into custody. During questioning, Murhe admitted his involvement in the murder of Bhagwat and also revealed the names of his two friends.
