MADURAI: Police have arrested two men, including a
disabled man, on charges of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in a village in Kanyakumari district of
Tamil Nadu.
The accused have been identified as Yesunesan, 32, of Aavaraikulam village in neighbouring Tirunelveli district and his
friend Aadhis, 23, of the same village.
Yesunesan, who was separated from his wife, had lost his left hand while trying to end his life by jumping off a moving train a few years ago, police said.
An officer investigating the case told TOI that Yesunesan had acquainted with the victim a month ago through a local television channel programme in which they shared messages and exchanged their numbers.
They started texting and developed a liking for each other. But Yesunesan did not disclose his disability to her.
“About a week ago, he told her that he had lost his left hand. During the inquiry, the girl told police that she had not wanted to reject a man because of his disability,” the police officer said and added the man expressed interest in meeting her last week.
The girl waited for him at Thovalai in Kanyakumari district. Yesunesan reached there with his friend Aadhis on a two-wheeler. She questioned him about the presence of his friend. Yesunesan told her that he needed Aadhis’ help to reach the place as he was a disabled man and could not ride a two-wheeler.
After an argument, the girl agreed to travel with them on the two-wheeler. They went to a secluded place at Aathangarai Pallivasal near Kudankulam where Yesunesan and Aadhis sexually assaulted her.
Though the incident had taken place five days ago, the girl reported it to the Nagercoil Nagercoil all-woman police on Monday night.
After investigations, the police booked the accused under sections 3 (penetrative
sexual assault), 4 (punishment for penetrative sexual assault), 8 (punishment for sexual assault) and 17 (punishment for abetment of sexual offence) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. They were arrested on Wednesday.
