Astonishing footage has captured the moment a man swerved off an empty highway to avoid paying a toll.

The video, which posted to the Humans of Bankstown Facebook page on Wednesday, shows the man turn onto the M5 South-West Motorway before suddenly veering left. 

'I'm about to show everyone how to avoid the Riverwood toll,' the driver says.

The man then drives over a patch of grass on the shoulder of the highway, passing the toll gantry before veering back onto the main road.

'And just like that, you get straight past it,' the man explains.

The video was viewed by thousands of people within hours of being uploaded online.

One commenter called the man 'Australian of the year,' while applauding him for his hack.

Other viewers questioned the man's logic, pointing out the damage it could cause to the car.

Cameras could also capture his licence plate, others noted. 

'Does hundreds of dollars of damage to his suspension and wheel bearings to save a few bucks,' one person posted.
