Srikanth crashes out; Sameer Verma prevails over Sakai Kazumasa

Top Indian shuttlers P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal notched up contrasting wins to enter the second round but K. Srikanth suffered a shock defeat in the Asia Badminton Championship here Wednesday.

Olympic and World championship silver-medallist Sindhu eased past Takahashi Sayaka of Japan 21-14, 21-7.

World No. 9 Saina had to work hard to get the better of China’s Han Yue. The seventh seeded Indian came back strongly to pull off a thrilling 12-21, 21-11, 21-17 win.

The results: Men: Shesar Hiren Rhustavito (Ina) bt Srikanth 21-16, 22-20; Sameer Verma bt Sakai Kazumasa (Jpn) 21-13, 17-21, 21-18.

Women: P.V. Sindhu bt Takahashi Sayaka (Jpn) 21-14, 21-7; Saina Nehwal bt Han Yue (Chn) 12-21, 21-11, 21-17.

Men Doubles: He Jiting & Tan Qiang (Chn) bt M.R. Arjun & Ramchandran Shlok 21-18, 21-15.

Women’s doubles: Jongkolphan Kititharakul & Rawinda Prajongjai (Tha) bt Meghana Jakkampudi & Poorvisha S.
