The Central Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested Yusuf Sharif, owner of Bengaluru-based real estate firm Umrah Developers, for allegedly duping many people by selling them land with forged documents. A team had raided his offices and houses on Richmond Road on Monday and Wednesday, and recovered documents related to property worth several crores.
According to the police, the accused forged documents and sold six acres of government land on the outskirts of the city to Indraprastha Shelters Private Limited, a real estate developer, for ₹7 crore in 2011. He allegedly used a second set of forged documents to mortgage the same land with another realtor for ₹3 crore in January this year.
Indraprastha Shelters filed a complaint with the police. “During the course of our investigation, we found that Yusuf had duped many people using fake property documents, following which the case was referred to the CCB,” said a police officer.
High drama
At the time of his arrest at the CCB headquarters, Yusuf allegedly attempted to stab himself with a pair of scissors that he grabbed from a police officer’s table.
Head Constable Sunil Kumar, who filed a complaint on Tuesday, alleged that Yusuf started abusing police personnel while he was being questioned and threatened to get them sacked. When Sunil tried to pacify him, he grabbed the pair of scissors.
Police officials intervened and took him to Victoria Hospital where he was treated for a minor stomach injury. “All this occurred in the presence of his advocate and personal doctor,” said the police.
The CCB arrested Yusuf who was produced in court and taken into police custody.
