One of the most engaging cars in Honda’s lineup, the Civic Type R, has been recreated on a 1:1 scale using small LEGO bricks.

A team of nine, led by Ryan McNaught, a LEGO Certified Professional, took over 1,300 hours to complete the project, during which they used more than 320,000 pieces. Supporting the structure is a steel frame and all bricks were glued together.

They did require a few brainstorming sessions to overcome some obstacles, such as the fragility of the window wipers and the rear wing that needed to better mimic the look of the real car. In the end, everything came together just fine, and the team couldn’t be more happy with the result.

“We’ve loved the challenge of this project”, said McNaught. “The car is shaped with a considerable amount of curved lines, making it a tough but interesting build. From the working lights and indicators to intricate LEGO Honda logos, the detail on the model has been a fun one for us to work on.”

There’s more than meets the eye, as this life-sized LEGO Civic Type R features working lights all around, which can be turned on and off using an iOS tablet.

From here on, Honda will showcase this Type R at different events in Australia in the coming months. Its first appearance will be on April 28 on Channel Nine, during the ‘LEGO Masters’ TV show, which will be judged by McNaught and local radio and TV personality Hamish Blake.
