Fishermen in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts have been advised not to venture into the sea due to depression prevailing in the Bay of Bengal.
According to a forecast by the National Weather Forecasting Centre, India Metereological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify and cross north Tamil Nadu coast around April 30. Gale wind of 90-100 km an hour will result in very rough/ high sea condition over south Bay of Bengal.
Nagapattinam Collector S. Suresh Kumar said measures have been taken to house displaced people in relief centres and keep cattle in safe confinement. Saws and earth-moving equipment have been kept ready to clear roads in case of fallen trees. Officials of various departments have been briefed about emergency response responsibilities. People should avoid going out on the day of cyclone, and keep their livestock safe.
The round-the-clock helpline 1077 could be availed to share information, he said. A press release issued by the Fisheries Department in Karaikal district advised fishers to avoid venturing out in traditional boats from April 26 until further notice. Boats and fishing nets must be moved away from the coast until the cyclone dissipates. The information will be disseminated in coastal hamlets through public address system.
