Father fights for his life after being dragged by Melbourne train

A 57-year-old father is fighting for his life in hospital after being dragged several metres by a train at Heatherdale station in Melbourne's east.

It is understood John Roberts was trying to board the train after the doors had closed on Saturday afternoon when he became trapped in the gap between the platform and carriage.

He was dragged up to 20 metres, breaking several bones and fracturing his cheekbone.

His brother Paul told Nine News his family is keeping a vigil at his bedside in the Royal Melbourne Hospital's intensive care unit.

"No one deserves this," Paul said. "It's just catching a train.

"No one deserves to be hurt. I try not to cry because someone's got to be strong."

Mr Roberts had surgery on Tuesday and was facing three more operations on Wednesday, according to Seven News.

Metro Trains and Victoria Police are investigating the incident.

Metro said in a statement that its highest priority was the safety of its passengers and staff.

"Our thoughts are with the passenger who was involved in Saturday’s incident at Heatherdale station," Metro said.

Mr Roberts remained in a critical condition on Wednesday morning, the hospital said.

Heatherdale station is in Mitcham on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines.
