The Collector and Superintendent of Police have warned stern action against those who create and circulate audio and video clips in social media, making derogatory remarks against other communities in a bid to disturb communal harmony and tranquillity.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, District Election Office and Collector J Jayakanthan and SP T Jayachandran also warned action against ‘Group Admins’ and those who forwarded the objectionable and communally sensitive messages on charges of abetment.

They said some ‘mischief mongers’ had recently circulated video clips in social platforms, boasting about their community and denigrating other communities with intent to disturb public peace and appealed to the general public not to give credence such postings.

Whenever such audio or video clips were posted in social platforms, the ‘Group Admins’ should delete them immediately and ensure that the members in the group never forwarded such messages, they said. The ‘Group Admins’ should also inform the police if they received any such message, they said.

Recently such messages were circulated in social media in some places in the district and police in the respective regions have registered cases and investigating, the Collector and the SP said. People should avoid sending counter messages in retaliation, they said. The cyber cell at the SP office was constantly monitoring various social platforms and no miscreant would be spared, they said.
