Members of Tamil Nadu Revenue Officers Association on Wednesday staged a demonstration outside the District Collector’s office seeking reinstatement of an officer and three staff members who were suspended due to alleged security break at a counting centre here.
Documents on voter turnout and other poll-related matters, submitted by presiding officers of all polling stations in the Madurai West Assembly segment, were photocopied by the four officials at a shop located a km from the centre on April 21 .
A Special Tahsildar, an office assistant from the Excise department and two employees of Madurai Corporation were involved in the matter.
M.P. Murugaiyan, a State secretary of TNROA, said there were no violation and the four officials acted on instructions of superiors. “The action was not done suo motu and no rules have been violated. Since a probe has been launched into the matter, why should officials suffer?” he asked.
The entire revenue staff was affected by the matter. “On the day of the incident, Revenue Division Officer V. Muruganandam was manhandled during a scuffle by party men. This association also condemns this action and has raised the issue with the Chief Election Officer,” he said.
