“Kalank is clearly underperforming. Dips on day four (Saturday). Trending is weak, so big business on day five (Sunday) is ruled out,” Taran Adarsh had tweeted Monday. The film had received a record opening at the box office but tanked based on mixed reviews and negative word of mouth. The film is also expected to fade out given the arrival of Avengers: Endgame this Friday, whose advance booking has broken all records.
On being asked about the dismal performance of Kalank, Alia said at the recently held Critics Choice Film Awards, “In this entertainment industry, everybody tries to put their best foot forward and try to do what we aspire to do. Sometimes it turns out to be good, sometimes not. And that’s something for us to learn, pick up the pieces and move on. It’s not like the sun shines everyday, it rains sometimes. It’s all a learning for everybody.”
The film was Karan Johar’s father Yash Johar’s dream project and was conceptualised more than a decade ago. Alia and Varun play Roop and Zafar in the film, respectively.
There are quite a few guest appearances in the film as well. Actor Kunal Kemmu plays a prominent role of Abdul whereas there are special dance numbers performed by Kiara Advani and Kriti Sanon. While Kiara has danced alongside Varun in First Class, Kriti can be seen grooving with Varun and Aditya in Aira Gaira.
