The Maharashtra home department on Tuesday suspended wrestler Narsingh Yadav, who was posted as an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) with the Mumbai Police, after he was found campaigning for the Congress’s Mumbai North West candidate, Sanjay Nirupam, on Sunday night. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against him and an FIR was registered by the Amboli police against him on Monday.

A senior official from the home department confirmed the development. “He has been suspended pending a departmental inquiry.” A video showing ACP Yadav sharing the stage with Nirupam went viral, raising questions if serving government officials can participate in poll campaigning. Nirupam was campaigning in Yadav Nagar in Andheri (West).

An officer from the Amboli police station said, “Yadav shared the stage with Congress leaders. As per the law, no officers are allowed to campaign for any political party. After we saw it, we alerted our seniors and a report was sent to the Election Commission soon after.” Another police officer said the ACP has been asked to be present at the police station. He has not been arrested.
