The Supreme Court of India today issued a contempt notice to Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the court's Rafale verdict.

Gandhi had earlier expressed regret for attributing his statement 'Chowkidar chor hai' to the apex court. The Congress president was responding to a Court notice on a petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi alleging that Gandhi has attributed his personal remarks to the top court and tried to create prejudice.

In a 26-page affidavit to SC, Rahul Gandhi had said: "My statement was made in the heat of political campaigning. It has been used (and misused) by my political opponents to project that I had deliberately and intentionally suggested that this Court had said 'Chowkidar Chor Hai'. Nothing could be farther from my mind."

However, the Supreme Court today said that it is not satisfied with Gandhi's response.

"On hearing senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi on behalf of Gandhi in the contempt petition we deem it fit to issue notice to the respondent ( Rahul) Gandhi," a bench headed by Chief Justcie Ranjan Gogoi said.

"We also direct the registry to list the review petition along with the contempt petition next Tuesday," the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said.

Meanwhile, the court said that it will hear the review petition on Rafale verdict on April 30 along with the criminal contempt petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against Gandhi on April 30.
