Rain brings Hyderabad to a standstill

more-in

For the third consecutive day, rain and thunderstorm coupled with squalls lashed the city by evening, bringing it to a standstill for a few hours. One person died after a tower collapsed in L.B. Stadium under the impact of wind.

As typified by the previous two days, the weather was warm and humid during the day, only to do a sudden volte-face late in the evening. At about 7.30-8 p.m., it started to rain with heavy winds at many places in the city. Heavy downpour was reported from areas such as Malkajgiri, West Marredpally, Qutbullahpur, Alwal, Secunderabad, and Musheerabad, and light to moderate rain from many other locations.

Squalls resembling sandstorms were reported from many areas, and within the first 15 minutes, GHMC’s emergency call centre received about 40 complaints with regard to various rain-related issues, including tree falls, poles uprooted and water logging. Traffic jams were reported from multiple locations, which took a long time to clear.

Complaints about tree falls or trees uprooted were received from areas such as Tarnaka, Old Alwal, Secunderabad Military Hospital, Vengal Rao Park, and others. A large tree branch broke and fell on the road at Banjara Hills Road No. 10, obstructing traffic severely. Traffic also slowed down on L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital road.

Water stagnation was reported from Lalapet, Lakshminagar, Tarnaka, and Secunderabad, among others. There were reports of window panes and wooden partitions of buildings being damaged under the wind impact. Partitions and window glasses broke in the top floors of the GHMC head office. The maximum temperature recorded during the day stood at 36 degrees Centigrade, which is three degrees lower than the normal. Night time temperature hovered at about 25 degrees.

The Meteorology department predicts similar weather for the coming three days, with minor fluctuations in temperature.
