Midmorning With Aundrea - April 23, 2019

>> gayle king was here,it'been it's been a record-breaking flu season.

We'll go over the numbers.

And, the gift of books.

We'll tell you about an upcoming united way book drive.

Plus, meteorologist jacob dickey is cooking up a storm.

Midmorning starts right now.

Was it was celebrated earlier this week.

Earth day is an opportunity to take stock of the changes in the environment.

And for many people, it's a time to look at ways to change their own footprint.

For some, that means investing in an electric vehicles.

There are now more options.

A new car company hopes to take sales even higher by supplying america's demand for trucks and suv's.

Kenneth craig explains.

This is not your grandfather's pick up....it can go zero to 60 in just "3" second and there's no engine under the hood..

The rivian r-one-t truck and the r-one-s s-u-v are powered by electricty.

"they both sit o our skateboard architecture which puts the battery in the floor."

Rivian is the creation of ceo rj scaringe ... who hopes his unique designs will give the electric auto industry a jolt.

"there's demand for vehicles that you can fit your kids, your gear, your pets, your stuff in and there's also a demand for electricfication so we wanted to put those two together."

Electric vehicles are rising in popularity.

Sales jumped last year to over 3- hundred thousand.

But that pales compared to overall auto sales..

With gas powered trucks and s-u-v's leading the way.

Several auto makers are responding with e-powered s-u- v's... the jaguar i- pace was just named overall winner of world car of the year.

"the ability t have an electric suv is definitely a big thing.

Consumers are showing that they want suvs, particularly, crossover suvs and that's where we are seeing a lot of growth."

Kc "alrigh " rivian plans to have its s-u-v and truck on the market in the fall of 20.

"what you see o the surface here is a tile based system where you can quickly slide between different tiles."

The rivian can travel about 4- hundred miles on a charge.

But this gas free option comes at a cost.

The vehicles will sell for around 70-thousand dollars... kenneth craig, cbs news, new york.

In new york, the international auto show is underway.

It's a chance for automakers to unveil new cars on the market and some that are years ahead of their time.

Tom hanson got a sneak peek.

Kia motors unveiled its áhot new ride at the new york international auto show: the "habaniro".

"we call it th every car..

Commuter..

Crossover..

Utility."

The futuristic cross-over is completely electric... with butterfly doors... motor trends ed loh says it can even drive itself... tom: so this is a concept, but when do you think we'd see a car like this on the road?

Exp: i think you could see elements here very soon.

This could be on the road in a few years.

It's just one of many "concep cars" takin center stage... and giving us a glimpse into the future of automotives... including infiniti's q- inspiration 094749 tom: walk me through some of the features of this car... peter: sure.

Well one of the things you can see is there are no door handles, so if you wanted to get inside, you'd just push the button right here on the pillar... and the door opens wide - nice wide opening... 094800 and inside you're looking at a host of technologies that could make it into our future products as we move forward.

It uses cameras instead of rearview mirrors... a reflection of how infiniti builds new vehicles... the qx50 -- which is currently on the market -- started áout as a concept car... usually manufactures are working 4-5 maybe 8 years out on concepts... so it takes a lot of time for these things to gestate... to come into fruition after they show the initial concept.

103221 while these cars may seem straight out the future...they may soon be -- a reality.

Tom hanson, cbs news, new york.

Technology is also headed inside.

A couple who had recently moved into their home is thankful to be alive.

They had only been living in the house for a few short weeks.

Our quentin smith talked to the couple who say they're heartbroken to see their home destroyed.

Nat it was in this bed where michelle jones was lying down just minutes before the storm came through thursday night.

" i'm just thankful to go because i was laying right where the tree just fell just minutes before it happened."

She's talking about this enormous tree that was uprooted and landed and fell on top of their home.

As the storm was getting closer, without thinking... jones got out of the bed and went to the back room....not knowing what was about to happen.

" i had just got up to go chec on my husband in the bedroom because i was laying in the living room.

When i got up the power went out, limbs fell on the trailer and all i had time to say was jeff i'm scared.

We heard a small boom, and then a big boom.

We walked down the hallway and we saw the tree right here."

It's a sight jones says she'll never forget.

"at first i was kind of worrie about my stuff.

I said my china cabinet, my tv, but bama husband looked over at me and he said just be glad that we're not taking you to the morgue because you were just laying right there where that tree was sitting, right there where the trees across your bed."

It took the couple over a decade to move their first home, but only a matter of minutes for mother nature started to rain on their parade.

" we live in an apartment for 1 years so we were just finally, we finally had our own place, because the landlord say i just called, treated like it's your own and that's what we did."

Though the home is a total loss there was one item in the house it was never touched or damaged in the storm..

" i had an angel and across across with some doves on it that was on top of my china cabinet.

The angel had fail but the cross with the dogs were still standing on top of the china cabinet."

Jones says she's always been a woman of strong faith, but after this storm her face got a little bit stronger and now she's more appreciative of every day life.

"god is awesome god is goo and he's the reason why am standing here right now."

Jones says they do plan to rebuild, but for right now they're going to stay with family until they can get back on their feet.

That same storm also caused damage at the cedar hill animal sanctuary in caledonia.

Employees there are reaching out to you now for help after the storm blew a massive tree on to their freezer crushing it.

That freezer contained 9 thousand dollars worth of food for the exotic animals.

Our cash matlock visits the sanctuary.

"there was a big loud thunde clap, and at the same time a boom.

That tree just went down."

Nancy gschwendtner is spending her day picking up after thursday's storm.

She runs an animal sanctuary that houses exotic animals.

In fact, the compound is home to 14 tigers, 2 lions, and 3 bobcats.

"it basically pancaked ou freezer, and in that freezer, we house all of the meat we feed to our exotics."

Nancy says the exotic animals eat over 120 pounds of meat a day.

And with the freezer out of commission, they only have enough food for the next 4 days.

"we've already reached out o facebook asking for donations, anything possible, freezers, meat..."

Employees say the financial blow has taken a toll on the facility.

"taking a hit of like 9 thousan dollars is a big deal to us.

We get no grants.

We get no federal money.

You know, it's people like you and me who donate and help us care about these animals that nobody else did."

The main goal of the sanctuary is to help animals in need.

"these animals have all ha pretty bad lives, and we are a true sanctuary."
