'She got very upset': Andrew Denton reveals the one interview he still feels 'terrible' about almost 16 years later

He's the veteran broadcaster known for grilling celebrities and politicians on Channel Seven's Interview and ABC series Enough Rope.

And ahead of Interview's return on Tuesday night, Andrew Denton has revealed the one question he still feels 'terrible' about asking almost 16 years later.

Andrew, 58, told News.com.au he 'upset' veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas when he spoke to her in Washington, D.C. in 2003.

'I went to Washington to interview her, and her husband had died, and she'd nursed him as he died,' Andrew recalled.

'I don't remember the question that I asked, but it was a very personal question about that, and she got very upset, and she said, "This is what you came for, isn't it?"'

Andrew added that he went for dinner with Helen after their awkward exchange and apologised sincerely for causing her 'distress'.

'I felt terrible about it and even retelling it now I still do,' Andrew concluded.

Helen Thomas, known as 'the dean of the White House press corps', used her seat in the front row of history to grill nine U.S. Presidents. She died in July 2013 aged 92.

Andrew also spoke to News.com.au about the question he most regrets not asking one of his celebrity guests.

He apparently wanted to ask British rock singer Rod Stewart about his lifelong passion for model trains but forgot to do so.

Because of Charlie's devoted following, Andrew knew their discussion would be controversial.

He told Who magazine last week: 'It didn't matter which way that interview went, I was going to get punched by one half of the audience.'
