NEW DELHI: A three-year-old child was left battling for life after being ran over by a car and dragged for almost 20 metres in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar on Monday evening.

The driver, Aas Mohammed, had dropped off the child at his home just moments before. Mohammed is known to the child's mother. DCP (northwest) Vijayanta Arya said a preliminary probe revealed that the incident happened at 5.17pm when Mohammed brought Gulam home. As he dropped the child at his doorstep, Mohammed received a phone call. Officers said that Mohammed thought that Gulam had crossed the road and started driving when the boy came under the car.

Thereafter, he was dragged for at least 20 metres before passersby signalled the driver to stop. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

Police are scanning CCTV footage of the area to ascertain the sequence of events and have asked the driver to join in the investigation. A case for dangerous driving and causing severe hurt was registered at the Bharat Nagar police station. It is also being probed whether the driver was under the influence of any intoxicant.
