NEW DELHI: A 25-year-man was injured and his pregnant wife was killed when a speeding car hit their motorcycle on Mukundpur flyover on Sunday night. The unidentified car driver didn’t stop the vehicle after hitting the couple and sped away.
The 25-year-old biker, Jitender, tried to revive his injured wife, Sugandhi (22), for over 15 minutes. Vehicles sped by but no one stopped to help the couple.
Jitender, a medical representative who lives in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, said the accident occurred when he and his wife were on their way home from Noida. “I was driving slowly as my wife was five months pregnant. We were descending the flyover when a speeding white car hit my motorcycle from behind. I was dragged along with the bike, while my wife fell on the road,” he added.
Police said Jitender couldn’t note down the registration details of the car. “I rushed to check on my wife and found that she was not moving. I tried to revive her using whatever medical knowledge I had, but to no avail. I cried out for help, but no one stopped. We were on the flyover for 15 minutes before a car driver stopped and took us to a hospital,” he said.
Sugandhi was declared brought dead at the hospital and her body was handed over to the family on Monday after an autopsy. She suffered severe head injuries in the crash, which led to her death.
“We had got engaged exactly a year ago. Our wedding anniversary was this Friday. We had gone to my brother’s place in Noida to make plans for celebrations and also to get her checked up by a gynaecologist. My life has now been shattered,” Jitender said.
The family members, who had come from their native village to celebrate the couple’s first anniversary, had to return with Sugandhi’s body for performing her last rites.
A case of causing death due to negligence and dangerous driving has been registered against unknown persons at Jahangirpuri police station. Police are checking CCTV footage from the flyover to identify the car and its driver.
