Ute allegedly rams police car before residents attack officers in Ipswich

There was chaos on an Ipswich street overnight after an allegedly stolen ute rammed a police car before nearby residents are then accused of attacked officers trying to arrest the ute driver.

Five people, including three teenagers, were charged with obstructing or assaulting the two officers, who suffered minor injuries, and the ute driver remains on the run.

It will be alleged the male and female senior constables were sitting in their marked police car on Kerry O’Brien Street in Collingwood Park, west of Brisbane, just before 8pm on Monday, waiting for a tow truck to collect a stolen vehicle.

Police alleged the officers saw a white ute in the street before the driver accelerated and smashed into the police car head-on, leaving both vehicles with serious damage and the ute on its side.

It will also be alleged as the officers tried to arrest the ute driver, five residents ran from a nearby house, assaulted and obstructed the officers.

Police reinforcements arrived and helped to arrest the five residents, but the ute driver slipped away despite extensive patrols in the area.

The injured officers were taken to hospital with arm injuries and discharged overnight.

A boy and girl, both aged 16, a 19-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were charged with one count each of obstructing police.

The man and woman are due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on May 15.

A 20-year-old Redbank Plains woman was charged with serious assault of police and is also due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on the May 15.

The ute driver has been described as Pacific Islander appearance with a solid build.
