Around 900 million eligible voters will have a say on who will form the next government in the world’s third-largest oil importer as India holds federal elections from April 11 to May 19. The sweeping energy reforms pursued by India in recent years have gained broad acceptance and are likely to stay irrespective of which political party or alliance comes to power. But further steps are needed to boost investment to lift domestic oil and gas production. There is also a need to reduce the country’s oil dependence by investing in and developing alternative energy sources. India currently imports nearly 80 per cent of its oil needs.
