Surat: Police busted a cricket betting racket being run from a tin shed on the terrace of a building in Mahidharpura area of the city on Sunday.
Police arrested Jitendra Jain, a resident of Galmandi, Rajesh Patel, Mayur Patel and Rajesh Patel, all three from Katargam, for running the racket through mobile applications and a website. One person named Ravi has been declared wanted. Police seized valuables worth Rs97,150 from the spot.
The accused were betting on IPL T20 match which was being played between Hyderabad and Kolkata teams. The betting was done through a website and two different mobile apps, police informed.
“The accused first registered themselves through the website and later placed bets using the two applications. There was no transaction of cash at the time of betting but later based on the points earned by one, ” police said.
“We are yet to investigate in detail how the racket was being run. The accused are being still questioned. It is possible that people not present at the spot were actively betting through these applications sitting elsewhere,” police said.
