At least three persons, including two pedestrians, were killed within 24 hours in separate hit-and-run cases
in the city.

On Sunday, a 70-year-old woman lost her life when an unidentified vehicle allegedly hit her while she was crossing the road near the bus stand on National Highway-8 in Manesar on Sunday. The police said three members of her family—husband, daughter and grandchild—were walking ahead of her and had cross the road, but she was hit by an approaching vehicle. The police also said the victim, who hails from West Bengal, was rushed to a private hospital in Manesar but died during the course of treatment.

Assistant sub-inspector Manoj Kumar at the Manesar police station said the accused driver of the unidentified vehicle was yet to be traced. A case was registered against the accused under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304-A (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Manesar police station on Sunday, said the police.

In another incident, an 18-year-old man died after he was allegedly hit by a tempo near Singha Chowk, on Sector 6-Sector 12A Road on Saturday around 10.30pm.

The police said the victim, a labourer, was allegedly intoxicated and jumped in front of a tempo. Satpal, sub-inspector (SI), Sector 5 police station, said the victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“His friend, who filed the complaint, said that he was under the influence of alcohol and loitering around the main road earlier the same evening. The police are trying to trace the accused driver of the tempo,” said SI Satpal, who goes by his first name. A case was registered under sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC at the Sector 5 police station on Sunday, said the police.

In yet another accident, a motorcyclist in his 30s, died after he was allegedly hit by an unknown vehicle near a petrol pump on Sohna road on Sunday evening. His brother-in-law filed a police complaint, stating that the victim, Mukesh Kumar, was returning to his accommodation in village Dhunela after completing his duty at a private office in the city, when the incident took place. The police said Kumar was rushed to a Sohna hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

A case was registered against the unidentified accused person under sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC at Sohna City police station, said the police.

These incidents add to the growing tally of road accidents in the city.

Over 442 people had died in road accidents in the city in 2018. The number reduced from a five-year high of 481 deaths in 2017. In 2015, 435 deaths were reported of which 191 were pedestrians and in 2016, 420 deaths were reported of which a majority, 195, were pedestrians. Apart from the issues pertaining to violations of traffic rules and speeding vehicles, these incidents also highlighted the lack of infrastructure for pedestrians in the city.
