Top 8 All-Electric Vehicles in Canada in 2019

The latest budget presented by the federal government of Canada represents a game changer in the automotive industry, as it includes a new program offering discounts offered to Canadians buying an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

To mark Earth Day 2019, we produced a list of the Top 8 all-electric vehicles eligible for the $5,000 discount offered under the federal government’s new iZEV program, discount that we should mention can be added to the provincial discounts currently available to residents of British Columbia and Quebec. Recall that Ontario also had in place an incentives program for the purchase of EVS, but ended it after Doug Ford’s conservatives took power in that province.

Like the folks in Ottawa who devised the new incentives program, we included only electric vehicles that retail starting at under $45,000, which excludes all of Tesla’s vehicles including the popular Model 3, retailing beginning at $47,600.

Nissan LEAF

We start fittingly with the top-selling electric car in the world. The Nissan LEAF got a makeover last year with a renewed design, an upgraded interior and a more-powerful powertrain benefiting from a longer range of 243 km.

With a starting price of $40,698, this edition, available in SV trim, is not as compelling a choice as the new LEAF S PLUS, which gets 363 km of range and a starting price of $43,998.
