Coimbatore: With the Medical Council of India (MCI) awarding 13 super-specialty seats across four specializations, the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) is getting ready to admit students from the next academic year.
CMCH received permission from MCI to offer super-specialty courses in neurology, cardiology, medical gastroenterology and surgical oncology on Saturday evening. While four seats were sanctioned for neurology, cardiology and medical gastroenterology each, surgical oncology has been allotted one seat.
CMCH dean B Ashokan welcomed the sanctioning of the seats, stating that it would help them offer more advanced treatment and treat more patients. “For the first three specialisations, if we take four students every year, we will have 12 students in those three departments. While most of the heads and professors leave by evening, these super-specialty students, who have completed post-graduation in the above fields and are on par with many assistant professors, will be available 24/7 on shifts and we will be able to treat any emergency in those fields immediately. For example, if a patient comes with vomiting of blood due to hemorrhaging or cirrhosis, the new doctors will immediately perform an endoscopy and control the situation. The hospital already performs 20 endoscopies a day and colonoscopies twice a week. This can also be increased if required,” he said.
CMCH already offers seven super-specialty coursesincluding three paediatric, two neurosurgery and two plastic surgery.
The hospital had applied for the seats in December. A team from MCI inspected the college on February 14.
