CHENNAI: After short break from the gruelling election campaign for the 39 parliament constituencies and 18 assembly segments, political leaders are gearing for the bypolls to four assembly constituencies.
While the AIADMK needs a minimum of 10 seats to remain safe and continue in the government, leaders of the DMK and the AMMK are set to upset the apple cart. Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan’s MNM will also try its luck.
DMK president MK Stalin will begin his election campaign on May 1, with the first phase set to continue till May 8. Senior DMK leaders will fan out across the constituencies of Ottapidaram, Thiruparankundram, Aravakurichi and Sulur to canvass for their party candidates.
Stalin had traversed nearly 7,500km, covering all parliamentary constituencies, in his 26-day campaign. Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who is also the joint coordinator of the AIADMK, covered around 8,000km during the period.
Palaniswami, along with his deputy O Panneerselvam, will soon hit the road to campaign for the bypolls.
However, the AIADMK camp, is yet to announce their itinerary.
AMMK leader T T V Dhinakaran has already announced his campaign schedule stretching from May 1-16. The general secretary of the AMMK is firm on landing a deadly blow to the EPS-OPS camp and make inroads into the government.
Although the distance he covered was not as much as that covered by EPS and Stalin, TTV, who has travelled nearly 3,500km, plans to campaign extensively in the four assembly segments.
He will spend two days in each of the four constituencies in the first phase, beginning with Thiruparankundram assembly segment. In the second and third phases, he will spend a day each in each of the constituencies.
MNM chief Kamal Haasan will begin his two-phase campaign on May 3. He plans to spend three days in each constituency. The first phase will end in Thiruparankundram on May 5. The second phase will commence on May 10 in Sulur. On May 12 and 13, he will visit Aravankurichi.
