BENGALURU: A five-year-old boy who was waiting to cross the road to buy snacks from a shop was run over by a speeding tempo. The vehicle dragged the kid for more than 20ft in Srigandhanagar, near Peenya, on Saturday.

Peenya traffic police said Gagan K, a resident of Kamakshipalya and LKG student, was visiting his maternal aunt Lakshmi during summer holidays. The boy, son of auto driver Lokesh, was playing with his 10-yearold cousin on 1st Cross Road in Srigandhanagar. Gagan’s cousin, who was busy cycling, gave the boy Rs 10 to buy some snacks. The kid was waiting to cross the road and go to a shop on the other side.

The tempo hit Gagan, who fell; his clothes got entangled in it’s rear wheel. The kid was dragged for more than 20ft, before passersby raised an alarm. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot.

Gagan sustained severe injuries on his head and right side of the body. He was rushed to Government Hospital in Hegganahalli, where he was declared brought dead. Peenya police have registered a case against the unidentified driver. “We have seized the tempo and efforts are on to nab the driver,” an officer said.
