Death in custody: Inmate found dead at Hakea Prison on Sunday

A 26-year-old prisoner has been found dead at Hakea Prison, prompting an internal review into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

A Department of Justice spokeswoman confirmed the death on Monday, and said the man had been found alone and unresponsive in his secured cell at the rpison on Sunday afternoon.

Prison staff unsuccessfully tried to revive the man.

The prison's superintendent has extended his condolences to the man's family on behalf of the Department.

The man's death is being treated as a death in custody, with WA Police preparing a report for the Coroner.

The Department will also conduct an internal review.

The death of the prisoner comes just weeks after the fatal bashing of another Hakea inmate, Alf Eades in March.

A prisoner was also taken to hospital in March after a stabbing at Hakea.

The prisoner, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious stab wounds. He was one of two inmates injured during the incident.
