Thiruvananthapuram: Three students, including two brothers, drowned in Kallada river at Enath in Pathanamthitta district on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Nazim (15) and Ajmal (19)—sons of Nazar of Kannamthundil— and their relative Niyaz (15).
The incident took place at Thengampuzhakkadavu, under the Enathu police station limits around 12:30pm. Nazim, Niyaz and another boy decided to take a dip in the river. While Nazim and Niyaz ventured into the river, the third boy stayed back.
When the other boy saw the two teenagers drowning, he called for help. Then Ajmal jumped in to save them, but all three drowned.
Bodies were recovered after an extensive search from near the spot the boys entered water. Police said that Nazim and Niyaz did not know swimming, and the spot from where they ventured into the water was deep due to sand mining.
Police handed over the bodies to family members after inquest. Postmortem was not conducted on the bodies as there was nothing unnatural about the deaths, police said.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan mourned the death of the three students. In his condolence statement, Vijayan also said that the parents should take special care to see that students do not enter water bodies to enjoy their vacation.
Vijayan requested all to abide by the guidelines that have been issued by the state disaster management authority to avert such untoward incidents.
