The pillion rider cannot afford to "just sit back" and not bother about safety measures. A young mother, who was returning from a temple after seeking blessings for her newborn daughter, fell off her husband's bike on which she was riding pillion. The loose end of her saree reportedly got entangled in the rear wheel of the moving bike, resulted in her fall and subsequent death.

According to case details, Sumitra Chandel (22) had given birth to a girl four months ago. A resident of Shri Om Nagar, Vibhaag 4, behind PNT Colony in Vasna, she had been staying at her father's house in the same society since the child's birth. On Sunday morning, her husband Bhupendra Chandel (28) picked up her and their daughter on his bike. The couple had decided to go to a temple in Lambha to seek blessings for the newborn.According to a family friend, this was perhaps the first time that Sumitra was stepping out of her home with the baby for a non-medical reason.

On their way back at around 9.15 am, when the bike was moving from Lambha overbridge towards Lambha Crossroads, the loose end of Sumitra's saree got entangled in its rear wheel. As the bike moved on, she was pulled off the bike with the infant in her hand. While the child escaped with just a scratch on the forehead, Sumitra sustained head injury. Bhupendra rushed her to LG Hospital in a rickshaw where she was declared dead by the hospital authorities.

'We just started a family'

Barely able to speak, a shocked Bhupendra told Mirror, "She was only 22. We had just begun our family and were celebrating the birth of our first child. I had just got her from my father-in-law's place in the morning to seek blessings from the deity for our child." His shirt was blood stained and his entire sleeve had been soaked in blood. His father refused to say anything, except, "Main kuch nahi bol paunga (I am in no position to speak)."

Suresh Nagora, a neighbour of Sumitra's father, said, "Bhupendra works as a salesman at a jewellery shop on CG Road. Apart from head injury Sumitra had abrasions on both hands while the baby girl escaped with a scratch on her forehead."
