Delivered premature, the newborns are now stable

A 23-year-old woman here has delivered quadruplets in what doctors call a rare case, happening once in eight lakh births.

It was the first pregnancy of P. Hemalatha, who got married to P.Laxman in July last year.

The couple, which resides in Barkas, found out about the four foetuses when ultrasound scanning was performed during the third month of pregnancy.

She delivered the babies, two boys and two girls, during the eighth month (32 weeks) of pregnancy at a private hospital in Chilkalguda on April 2.

Since it was premature delivery, the newborns, weighing between 1 kg to 1.4 kg, were kept under medical observation in Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Hemalatha and the babies were shifted to another hospital in Nallakunta where medical care was provided. They were shifted out of ICU on different days, and the last one was moved out on Saturday.

Dr N.L., Sridhar, who was part of the team that delivered the babies, said the mother and newborns are now stable.
