PATNA: Thousands of devotees thronged city churches with their families and friends at midnight on Saturday to begin Easter celebrations and offer prayers. They also lit candles and were served cakes and boiled eggs.
Easter marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ following his crucifixion on Good Friday. It is the celebration of victory over death. According to the New Testament, Jesus died on the cross on Friday and came back to life three days later after his burial.
Patna Archbishop William D’Souza lit the Paschal candle at the Queen of Apostles Church in Kurji during the Saturday vigil and announced that Jesus Christ had risen.
Fr Suresh Xaxa OFM, parish priest of Padri Ki Haveli in Patna City, urged people to spread peace, harmony and brotherhood. “It is a happy occasion. Let us celebrate this day with love,” he told this newspaper.
“Easter is a day of joy, hope and peace. Jesus never committed any mistake and showed people the right path,” Fr Susai Raj SJ, officiating parish priest of the Kurji church, said, adding Easter also marked the end of the 40-day period of fasting and penance.
Patna City resident Alan Joseph celebrated Easter in a simple way and spent time with friends and family. He said, “During Lent, I abstained from eating meat and observed fast on Fridays.”
Digha resident Marie Anne D’Cruze prepared a sumptuous lunch for her family on Easter Sunday. “I made bread, doughnuts and cake to celebrate this special day,” she said.
