PATNA: Nearly 800 students have been selected for the six-month PhD coursework of Patna University (PU) which will start from Monday.

While classes of the first paper on research methodology will be conducted by the dean of the faculty concerned till July 21, Paper II classes (on the subject concerned) will be held by different departments from July 22 to October 21. The examination of the candidates will be completed by November and all the qualified candidates given certificates and mark sheets as soon as possible. A student will have to obtain at least 55% marks in the examination. Registration of all such candidates will be done in November and December.

As per PU records, as many as 810 vacancies for PhD scholars exist in different departments, including 181 in humanities, 200 in social sciences, 369 in science, 17 in law, 11 in education and 32 in commerce.

PU had conducted the PhD registration test in February last year and the results were published soon after. The final selection of candidates for pursuing research work, however, could not be made, owing to the complaints made by a section of candidates to the chancellor’s secretariat and the Patna high court. PU was able to make a move in this regard only when the matter was finally decided by the court almost a fortnight ago.

The registration of scholars in PU was suspended ever since the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the new PhD regulations, 2016. Earlier, PU had taken its own time in implementing even the revised UGC guidelines (2009). Consequently, a number of NET-qualified candidates, who had been awarded research fellowships, migrated to some other universities due to delay in registration.

An analysis of the PhD degrees awarded by PU during the last few years shows a progressive decline in the number of candidates getting doctorate degrees year after year.

“In 2011-12, as many as 216 scholars were awarded PhD degrees while the number of recipients in 2012-13 was 212. In 2013-14, the figure slumped to 187 and in 2014-15, only 174 candidates were awarded degrees. The number of PhD degree recipients in 2015-16 was just 52. In 2016-17 altogether 78 scholars, including 14 as per the new regulations, were awarded doctorate degrees, while 89, including 33 as per the new guidelines, were awarded degrees in 2017-18. Almost 15 years ago, the university used to award more than 300 PhD degrees every year,” said PU examination controller R K Mandal.
