Watching out for you, this is newswatch 12 this morning."

Announcer says "watching out for you, this is newswatch 12 point s tire and auto sports desk, newswatch 12 sports with jake garcia" jake: over the past two years, southern oregon softball's best hitters have had a career path that's been exactly the same.

Harlee donovan last season... lauren quirke and allie stines this season... all came to sou via san mateo community college.

The bay area juco has sent six players to sou since 2015... which is the most for any four-year school in that span.

Here's the story on how that came to be... as stines and quirke are newswatch 12's amateur athletes.

Stines says, "i committed to sou and i told her one day, i was like, 'i can't picture not playing with you any more.'" quirke says, "when i found out allie was coming, i was like, 'oh, i get to finish my softball career with my best friend?

Okay let's do it.'" stines says, "and then she committed here too and now we're happy."

Allie stines and lauren quirke are bound by a friendship that's tied to the college of san mateo.

Otherwise known as sou of the south... the pipeline from csm to southern oregon has been hard to ignore.

Started by kayleen smith in 2016... highlighted by harlee donovan in 2018... and punctuated by quirke and stines in 2019.

Success breeds success ... and experience at the bay area juco powerhouse has prepared them for life at ashland's naia powerhouse.

Stines says, "at csm that's all they preached is that practiced like we were any other four-year college team and we went out and we played that way."

The relationship between the two schools stems from a relationship between the coaches.

Sou head coach jessica pistole and csm head coach nicole borg met when pistole was at william jessup.

Pistole says, "their expectation is high there and they expect to win championships, they expect to be competing for a state title year after year after year and to expect to be playing for that, you approach the game a little bit differently."

Borg says, "they want to be difference makers and i think that's why coach pistole likes looking at college of san mateo players is because she knows they know how to succeed."

And succeed is exactly what stines and quirke have done.

Stines the first raider ever to hit 20 doubles in a season.

Quirke ranked fourth in the country in total bases.

Pistole says, "they are not kidding when they will stay in that cage after practice till they get it right."

Two san mateo products ... two of sou's best hitters... two friends happy their softball paths have been so intertwined.

Stines says, "we always talked about being a package deal one day and going and getting recriuted to the same place.

It's super special that lauren's here with me."

Jake: stines and quirke lead sou in pretty much every hitting category this year.

You can catch them in action this weekend, as the raiders host providence in their last home series of the regular season.
