Surat: A 33-year-old woman from Mumbai was arrested by Chowk Bazaar police for an alleged attempt to extort Rs80 lakh from a city-based paediatrician here on Saturday. The doctor registered the police complaint after the accused woman lodged a rape complaint against him at Sayajigunj police station of Vadodara on March 23, two days after which he was arrested. Mistry was granted bail by a court on April 2.
The woman, booked for extortion under Indian Penal Code, was arrested by police when she came here along with husband to submit evidences in her defence. She was produced in a local court which granted her bail soon after. She had been summoned by police on an application submitted by complainant Dr Vipul Mistry, who runs a paediatric hospital in the city. Police conducted a preliminary inquiry before lodging the extortion complaint.

“The complainant had provided some evidences to police to prove that he was receiving extortion threats,” a police officer said.

Mistry has alleged in his complaint that he knew the woman since 2009 after they came in touch through a matrimonial website. They met for first time in Vadodara at a mall but the woman got married to the man, who is her current husband in 2010. She migrated to Malaysia with her husband and upon return in 2014 she came in touch with Mistry again through Facebook.

They began talking over phone before meeting in Mumbai. Mistry alleged he was called to Mumbai by the woman and that they had physical relationship multiple times in Mumbai and Vadodara. The woman then informed Mistry that she has a son from their relationship and started demanding money from him. He used to deposit money in her bank accounts at regular intervals. The woman recently asked him to give her Rs80 lakh, the complainant alleged.

Investigation in the rape complaint lodged by the woman revealed that her husband came to know about the blood group of their son two years ago. He found that the boy’s blood group neither matched his nor the woman’s. The woman then informed her husband that the boy was born out her relationship with Mistry. The woman’s husband refused to give any money for raising the boy and she then began demanding money from Mistry, police investigation revealed. The woman also put pressure on Mistry to marry her, but he refused being already married.
