Sullia which recorded the highest polling among the eight Assembly segments in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections in Dakshina Kannada recorded 44 more additional votes when compared to last year’s Assembly polls.

Mangaluru City South, which polled the lowest voting in this election, recorded 4,975 more additional votes this time when compared to the 2018 Assembly polls.

In the Assembly polls last year too, the highest voting in the district had been recorded in Sullia constituency and the lowest in Mangaluru City South constituency.

According to the statistics with the Election Commission, in one year, 1,899 new voters — from 1,98,686 last year to 2,00,585 voters — were added in Sullia Assembly constituency. But the total votes polled from the Assembly election to the Lok Sabha election rose by only 44 – from 1,68,768 in 2018 to 1,68,812 in 2019.

If the same constituency recorded 84.94% polling for the Assembly election last year the voting in the Lok Sabha election this year stood at 84.16%.

Mangaluru City South

In Mangaluru City South, 138 new voters – from 2,40,057 in 2018 to 2,40,195 in 2019 – were added in a year.

The total votes polled went up from 1,63,656 in 2018 to 1,68,631, a rise of 4,975 votes.

The total polling recorded in the 2018 Assembly elections was 68.17 % and in this week’s Lok Sabha election it was at 70.21 %.

The polling records for the two elections were the lowest among eight Assembly segments in Dakshina Kannada.

The statistics reveal that many voters who stayed away from voting in Mangaluru City South, purely an urban area, last year turned up for voting this time.

The constituency, which is the heart of Mangaluru, has 38 of the total 60 wards coming under Mangaluru City Corporation. It accounts for 63% of the wards.

In Sullia, which is entirely a rural area, the turnout of voters has not gone up significantly in the Lok Sabha election.
