At least seven people died while 34 were injured, after a passenger bus collided with a truck on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway near Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. Police said identification of the deceased is underway.
According to the police, the accident took place when the private bus, while on its way from Delhi to Varanasi, lost control and rammed into the trolley of a truck it was trying to overtake. "A passerby called the police control room. A police team reached the spot but they faced great difficulty in pulling out the bodies, since the impact of the accident left the bus severely mangled. The passengers were rescued after cutting the parts of the bus. All injured persons were brought to a hospital in Saifai in Uttar Pradesh, and seven persons were declared dead," said Rakesh Pandey, in charge of UP's Karhal police station.
The deceased were sent for post-mortem, but numbers of the deceased is expected to rise, the police said. "The driver of the bus has also died. We will record statements of the injured once they are in a condition to talk. Family members of the deceased have also been informed about the accident," said Pandey.
