AGRA: At least seven passengers were killed and about 40 injured after a private bus rammed into a truck on Agra-Lucknow Expressway on Saturday night.

The accident took place at around 10.45 pm near Kanjhara village at milestone 87 under Karhal police jurisdiction of Mainpuri district.

According to police, the bus was heading towards Varanasi from Delhi when it rammed into the rear of a truck loaded with tiles.

"It seems that the bus driver dozed off and lost control over the vehicle. Our dial 100 team, which was one km away from the accident spot, was the first respondent. The constables broke the windowpane of the air-conditioned bus with rifle butt in order to release the smoke and fume suffocating the passengers. Later, other policemen also arrived and joined the rescue work," said circle officer Rakesh Kumar Pandey of Karhal while speaking to TOI.

All the injured passengers have been admitted to Saifai medical college. Two Spanish tourists are also among the injured passengers.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Shahshank Yadav (28) from Rae Bareli, Shashir Shukla (36) from Lucknow, his daughter Vidushi Shukla (7), Tinku Singh Chauhan (22) from Kanpur Dehat, his cousin Shivam Singh Chauhan (21) and Mohan Lal Gupta (57) of Varanasi. The seventh victim was yet to be identified.
