Indore: City zoo has more to offer to visitors especially children who will venture out to observe and connect with wildlife this summer.Setting a good example, Indore Municipal Corporation has used recycled furniture and reused Indore Municipal Corporation’s discarded fences in the zoo. The fences were received from revamped bridges in the city as scrap. The fences were cut, coloured and modified to give an appealing look. “We intend to reuse, reduce and recycle because our actions affect environment and animals,” zoo director Dr Uttam Yadav said. He talked about problems animals face due to changing climate and increasing pollution.
Because tyres are durable and non-biodegradable, they occupy lot of space in landfills. “According to data of a study conducted by NGO, 127.34 million tyres were produced in India in 2016-17 – an increase of 12% from the previous year – out of which 60% tyres ended up at landfills or got incinerated,” Yadav said. According to a research commissioned by a local tyre company, India will have more than 100 million end-of-life tyres every year without proper mechanisms in place to recycle or dispose of these tyres.
Expressing need for reusing fences, Yadav said, “We have become a photographic community where we just want everything to look pretty and different.” Regularly buying new items to decorate houses and adds to expenses and affects environment.
“We talk about sustainable living but that is possible only if we learn to reuse and revamp our belongings instead of picking new ones,” Yadav said.
Make outdoor seats with tyres
Place two used tyres on top of each other.
Drill a hole inside tyre. Repeat 4 times so that the drilled holes acquire a square shape.
Push bolts through the holes, and then use nuts to tighten. The two tyres should now be fastened to each other.
On tyre top, drill 20 evenly spaced holes around the rim. Make sure the holes are drilled about 20 mm away from tyre rim.
Take your rope, feed one end through the washer and knot the end of the rope so that it cannot pull through.
Insert other end of rope through one of the holes in tyre. Start from inside and push the rope upwards, so that your rope is sticking out from one of drilled holes.
Complete weaving and outdoor seat is ready.
