Ghaziabad: A man involved in several cases of chain snatching was arrested on Friday night following a gunfight in Sahibabad. The accused has been identified as Kishanlal (35), a resident of Shahdara in Delhi. His crimes were first reported in 2005 and over 30 cases have been lodged against him across NCR.
Laxmi Singh Chauhan, SHO of Link Road police station, told TOI that he snatched two chains on Friday from outside the Banana Tree hotel, which was booked for a function on Friday, but during the third attempt he was arrested by a constable after firing. After the first two snatchings were reported at 7.30pm and 9pm respectively, police increased surveillance in the area and stationed constable Akhilesh Upadhyay (28) close to the hotel in civil clothes.
“Around 10.30pm, he came for the third chain and as soon as he attempted to snatch a chain from a woman, the cop spotted him and ran to nab him. On being chased, the accused started firing at the cop and the constable returned fire, shooting the accused in the right leg. He was later taken to the hospital,” Chauhan said.
“Police booked him under Section 392 (robbery) of the IPC and under provisions of the Arms Act. We also seized his motorcycle and recovered two chains from the accused,” Chauhan added.
