The Delhi Police has arrested two members of a gang active in west Delhi that used to rent out stolen high-speed motorcycles to snatchers, said the police on Friday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj said they have arrested two vehicle thieves and recovered eight stolen motorcycles and four stolen mobile phones from their possession.
The arrested accused have been identified as Vijay and Aniket Vaid, the police said.
Ms. Bhardwaj said that they had received an information about Vijay and Aniket Vaid, who were previously involved in many cases and were recently committing thefts. They were held from Tagore Garden where they had arrived to dispose of stolen mobile phones on a stolen motorcycle.
During interrogation, accused Vijay disclosed that he was previously arrested in cases of thefts and while in jail, he planned to form his own gang. He roped in Aniket, who lives in the same area as him, in his plan.
“They designed a self-styled start-up. They used to steal high-speed motorcycles for putting them on rent to various snatchers in Mangolpuri and Sultanpuri. They were aware of the fact that snatchers need stolen bikes so that they could not be identified,” said Ms. Bhardwaj.
₹1,000-2,000 per hour
Their business got pace as the same became popular among snatchers who managed to get bikes on rent from them at ₹1,000-2,000 per hour, Ms. Bhardwaj added.
The police also said that Vijay is an expert in breaking the locks of high-end motorcycles. The gang used to park stolen two-wheelers on the streets of their area to camouflage those. As and when customers wanted two-wheelers, the accused would bring the vehicles from where those had been parked and give those to the snatchers on rent.
They use to take the money in advance as they did not want to take risk, knowing well that the snatchers could get caught while committing the crime.
The gang also used to take snatched mobile phones and other properties from the customers who could not pay the rent amount. Later the accused used to sell the mobile phones.
The gang has committed many such crimes in the west and other districts in Delhi. Efforts are on to nab the other accomplices of the arrested accused, the police said.
