NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old boy was left battling for his life after being shot in the head by a gun fired in celebration at a wedding in north Delhi’s Rithala on Saturday evening.
S D Mishra, DCP (Rohini), identified the victim as Gaurav, a Class VII student, and said a case for attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Arms Act has been registered. The cops are also probing if the weapon that was used in the incident was a licensed one or illegally procured.
The incident took place around 7.30pm in Rithala when a wedding procession was passing by a house. The guests had gathered outside the house on their way to the wedding venue. The cops said that Gaurav was on the balcony watching the baarat.
One of the guests brandished a gun and began firing in the air. Police said that despite the repeated requests of others not to use the gun, the man continued firing in the air. Apparently a stray bullet hit the boy on his head and he fell from the balcony.
His parents rushed him to a nearby hospital and alerted the cops about the incident. Later, the boy was admitted in a private hospital in critical condition where he underwent emergency surgery on Saturday night.
The family of the boy recorded statements before the cops as did the neighbours. Investigating officers said that the process to identify the man who used the gun and was part of the wedding procession is under way.
A team of forensic experts visited the scene of crime and collected samples, among them a number of empty cartridges from the shots fired in the wedding procession.
The police teams are scanning videos of the procession to establish the sequence of events leading to the boy being shot. CCTV footage available in the area is also being studied.
