Udupi: Udupi has added yet another numero uno feather to its cap – this time for 100% success in webcasting during first phase of polls in Karnataka and second phase for India as a whole – on April 18. Elections were held in 14 districts in the state on Thursday and the poll process was webcast in 54 booths in Udupi district. While some webcams in other districts failed for one or the other reason, this wasn’t the case with the 54 webcams here.
Hephsiba Rani Koralapati, district election officer, said webcasting of polls was carried out in 54 sensitive booths in the district to keep tabs on any untoward incident that might take place, and footage from them was monitored continuously at the control room in the office of the deputy commissioner. The authorities started the process of installing the webcams in the 54 booths since April 7, and the same was tested for any lacuane, Hephsiba said.

In neighbouring Dakshina Kannada, webcams were set up in 110 booths and 104 cameras worked, in Mysuru it was 163 webcams out of 176 installed that worked. Chitradurga saw 66 out of 80 webcams installed which worked. In Tumakuru, 131 out of 140 cameras installed worked; while in Mandya 89 out of the 101 webcams installed functioned properly. In Bengaluru Central, 69 out of 87 webcams that were installed worked.

In Bengaluru North, 95 out of 101 webcams that were installed worked, while in Kolar 86 out of 100 webcams worked, in Ramanagar 59 out of 60 webcams that were set up were functional, in Bengaluru South, 91 out of 100 webcams that were installed served their purpose, in Bengaluru Rural 95 out of 100 webcams functioned, in Hassan 129 out of 134 cameras worked, and in Chikkaballapur 69 out of 70 webcams worked. Only in Udupi, all the 54 webcams that were used, functioned seamlessly.

Accompanied by Vidya Kumar, additional DC, the DC personally ensured the booths had proper power supply, tested it for signal strength and directed headmasters of schools and PDOs to carry out remedial measures. The DC and her team also inspected their functioning on the eve of polls. Likewise, cameras have been installed in 16 sensitive booths in Baindoor assembly constituency, part of Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat that goes to polls on April 23.
