LUDHIANA: A day after the “murder” of 53-year-old Dharminder Kumar of Vishwakarma Nagar, his family on Friday staged a protest at Tajpur Chowk on Ludhiana-Delhi national nighway, demanding arrest of the accused. The agitators blocked the highway, causing a massive traffic jam for over an hour.

The kin also kept the body near the spot in an ambulance and refused to cremate it till the accused were arrested. Later with the intervention of senior police officers, the family was pacified and they cremated the body by late afternoon.

On Thursday evening, Dharminder, a cabinetmaker, and his brother Rakesh Kumar had an argument with their neighbour Keshav, his friends and family members. It was alleged that Keshav and his friends were peeping into the house of the brothers to harass women there. Rakesh objected to it and indulged in a scuffle with Keshav. When Dharminder came to his rescue, he was allegedly attacked with a brick. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

On the complaint of Rakesh, division 7 police registered a case against Keshav, his mother Kiran, sister Shivani and friends, Ankush Rana and Jagan. Rakesh alleged that Kiran had handed over the brick to her son and instigated him to assault Dharminder. Keshav’s sister Shivani had also provoked her brother.

Rakesh alleged, “As police did not arrest the killers of my brother, we came on the road to seek justice.”

The protest started at noon and continued till 1.30pm. During the period, traffic on Ludhiana-Delhi highway remained blocked.

Assistant commissioner of police (East) Devinder Chaudhary said the kin were pacified and they agreed to cremate the body after police assured early arrest of the accused.

The deceased is survived by wife and two children.

Viscera report awaited

On Friday, a board of three doctors, comprising Dr Gurvinder Kaur, Dr Sheetal and Dr Seema Chopra, conducted the post-mortem of Dharminder. The board sent viscera sample to a Kharar-based laboratory. “The cause of death will be ascertained after receiving the viscera report. No injury marks were found on the body of Dharminder,” said a doctor.

MLA visits kin

MLA, East constituency, Sanjay Talwar along with Congress workers reached the house of Dharminder to console the family.
