Mob damages police vehicles, prohibitory orders clamped on town

Violence erupted again in Ponnamaravathi town on Friday after an audio clip containing derogatory comments against Muthuraja community went viral on Thursday.

Prohibitory orders have been clamped on the town in an attempt to restore normalcy.

Normal life was hit as vehicular traffic was completely suspended on Friday.

On Thursday night, a large number of villagers near Ponnamaravathi said to be belonging to Muthuraja community besieged the police station demanding action against the accused who had spoken against their community.

A section of protesters allegedly damaged some shops and vehicles in the town. The protesters dispersed after the police promised action.

M. Karuppan, an office-bearer of the Perarasar Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar Sangam, had complained to the police that in the audio clip two unidentified persons abused his community and its women. He demanded that the accused be traced and action initiated against them, said police sources.
