PUNE: Airfares have surged in a matter of days throwing plans for holiday and business travellers out of gear.

Travel sources said after the suspension of all Jet Airways flight operations, international last-minute fares to the UK, Europe and the US have shot up by over 50% as compared to the last month. A Mumbai to London non-stop, return fare per person booked 10 days before the travel date now costs a staggering Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh.

The surge in airfares is for the travel period in April and May. Travel sources said June and July fares are still normal. Even if booked a month in advance, a return fare on the same route (Mumbai to London) for a travel date on May 19 will cost between Rs 90,000 and Rs 1.10 lakh or more per person.
