PU results ahead of CET a bad precedent?
Mangaluru: The announcement of PU results before K-CET is likely to affect the performance of candidates, feel academicians and students.
The move by the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE), which has broken the tradition of announcing PU results before conducting CET this year, was to ensure there’s no pressure on students ahead of the entrance exams. But the move is seen as likely to affect students’ performance in the competitive exam scheduled for the end of April. Education experts say that since the announcement of results, due to stress, many students haven’t been able to study well. After seeing their marks, if it’s below expectations, they find it harder to concentrate. “So it’s advisable to announce PU results after CET like how it used to be done earlier,” feels Ananth Prabhu G, adviser, Vikas Group of Institutions.

A PU science lecturer pointed out that it does affect students’ performance it also depends on the marks a student scored in the examination. “If the marks are poor, it will affect him mentally and he or she may not able to prepare well for the CET. PU students are under tremendous stress starting from December as there are umpteen number of competitive exams to preare for. The government should also make an attempt to consider 75 percent of PU marks in K-CET, which will reduce the burden on students,” the lecturer added.

Student Adhithya, who is preparing for the CET, said the early announcement of PU results will affect performance, “However, I have taken it positively and am working on my weakness.”

According to DPUE sources, they are expecting a dip in the number of candidates appearing for CET because of the early announcement of II PU results. Students who secure less marks in science stream or a low aggregate may not take CET. However, officials have advised students not to skip CET even if they fail to clear II PU exams as they can do better in supplementary exams.

Ushaprabha N Nayak, vice chairperson, Expert Educational and Charitable Institutions, said, “There is an effect on performance, but a positive one. Since the PU results were announced around two weeks prior to CET, it will help students identify their weak points and work on them so that they can better it in the CET. If the results were announced just a couple of days before CET, then it would have had a negative impact on their performance. CET rankings are based on combined performance in board exams and CET, therefore it is important to make up for any shortcomings in one of the exams by performing better in the other.”

In 2018, K-CET Examinations were held on April 18-19, while PUC results were announced on April 30. This year PU results were out on April 15 and K-CET Examination are scheduled for April 29 and 30.
